The St. Patrick’s Parade Committee announced the selection of this year's Grand Marshals: Cornelius (Connie) Doolan and 4 year old Matthew McGrorty. Matthew has been diagnosed with Hepatoblastoma (a form of liver cancer) and he will lead the marches, with Connie, in the Bat Mobile, a resident of Bethpage offered for this Honorary Grand Marshal – Bethpage St. Patrick’s Day Parade, 2008 Matthew Bryan McGrorty, affectionately known as “Matty,” was a bright, joyful four-year-old from Bethpage whose courage and radiant spirit touched countless lives in his short time with us. Born in 2004, Matthew was the beloved son of John and Carol McGrorty, twin brother to Ashlynn, and little brother to Sean. He was a happy, easygoing child who loved planes, trains, baseball, and riding his tricycle—always bringing smiles to everyone around him. In 2008, while bravely battling hepatoblastoma—a rare liver cancer diagnosed when he was just two years old—Matthew was selected as Honorary Co-Grand Marshal of the 17th Annual Bethpage St. Patrick’s Day Parade, sharing the honor alongside parade founder Cornelius “Connie” Doolan. On March 2, 2008, this remarkable little boy led the parade down the streets of his hometown in a special vehicle, waving to the cheering crowds who came out to celebrate his unbreakable spirit and Irish heritage. The entire Bethpage community rallied around Matthew and his family, making that day an unforgettable tribute to his resilience and joy. Matthew passed away peacefully on June 18, 2008, surrounded by his loving family, leaving behind a legacy far greater than his years. Matty’s smile, his love for life, and the way he inspired an entire community remain forever etched in our hearts. As a former Grand Marshal, he represents the very best of Bethpage’s St. Patrick’s Day tradition: courage, family, and unbreakable Irish spirit.
🍀 Rest in peace, Matty. You will always be our Grand Marshal. 🍀
