The Bethpage St. Patrick’s Parade was born out of a shared pride in Irish heritage and community spirit. Its roots trace back to 1992, when local residents were inspired by their friend and neighbor, Cornelius “Connie” Doolan, who had the honor of serving as Grand Marshal of New York City’s iconic St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
That moment of pride sparked an idea among a few dedicated community members—to bring the same joy and celebration they saw on Fifth Avenue to their own hometown of Bethpage. With the support of friends, neighbors, and local leaders, the idea quickly took shape. It was decided that, just as in New York City, the celebration would begin with a Mass—held at St. Martin of Tours Church—followed by a parade through the heart of Bethpage.
On March 1, 1992, after the 12:30 Mass celebrated by Rev. George Keaveney, the very first Bethpage St. Patrick’s Parade proudly stepped off. Marchers paraded down Central Avenue, turned onto Broadway, and passed a cheering crowd at the reviewing stand—beginning a beloved tradition that continues to this day.
Today, the parade continues under the leadership of a devoted committee whose unwavering dedication, tireless efforts, and deep sense of community ensure that this cherished tradition not only endures but continues to flourish—honoring the faith, pride, and unity that have defined the Bethpage St. Patrick’s Parade since its inception.
